The citizens of this society choose happiness over the truth and remain ignorant to the oppressive control of the World State. In Brave New World Huxley comments on the citizen’s constant desire for happiness, as the majority of them are purposely deluding themselves with the drug Soma. Brave New World provides a satirical look at a totalitarian society in which the trends of Huxley’s day have been taken to the extremes.Įven though Huxley wrote this novel in 1931 his satire about contemporary social and moral issues still have relevance in our consumer based society today. As satires purpose is to ridicule with the hope of reform, Huxley portrays a society that satirizes many of the trends and morals of his own time. This novel anticipates where our consumer society could be headed and can be received as a warning for the readers. We see this in Huxley’s fictional society through the implanted mind-set in the citizens that success is measured by economic prosperity and happiness is achieved through material possessions and brief physical pleasures. The historical context for this book is very important to the narrative as it informs the ready of the satirical aspects that Huxley is trying to address. The society which Huxley has created acts as a satire of the society he existed in and yet it also very relevant to the society in which we live now.
